A bone marrow biopsy is a medical procedure used to examine the soft tissue inside your bones, known as bone marrow, where blood cells are produced. It is commonly performed to diagnose and monitor various blood disorders, cancers, and bone marrow diseases. The biopsy allows doctors to analyze the health of the bone marrow, determine whether it is functioning properly, and detect abnormalities such as cancerous cells.
A genetic study involves the analysis of genes, DNA sequences, and chromosomes to investigate how genetic variations affect biological processes. This includes understanding inherited conditions, genetic predispositions to diseases, and how genes interact with the environment. Genetic studies can be conducted at different levels, including :-
A bone marrow biopsy is a medical procedure where a small sample of bone marrow tissue is removed for examination. This procedure helps doctors evaluate the production of blood cells and detect any abnormalities, such as cancerous cells or bone marrow diseases.
You may need a bone marrow biopsy if you have abnormal blood cell counts, unexplained anemia, or to diagnose conditions like leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, or other bone marrow disorders. It is also used to stage cancer and monitor the effectiveness of treatments.
A needle is inserted into your bone, typically the hipbone, to remove a small amount of bone marrow tissue. Local anesthesia is used to numb the area, and in some cases, sedation is provided. The procedure usually takes about 30 minutes.
You may feel some discomfort or pressure during the procedure, but local anesthesia is used to minimize pain. After the procedure, you may experience soreness at the biopsy site for a few days.
In a bone marrow aspiration, a liquid sample of the bone marrow is removed, while in a bone marrow biopsy, a small solid piece of bone marrow tissue is collected. Often, both procedures are done simultaneously to get comprehensive information.
Before the procedure, inform your doctor about any medications you are taking, especially blood thinners, as they may increase the risk of bleeding. You may be advised to stop certain medications before the procedure. You should also arrange for someone to drive you home if sedation is used.
